Love The Process
BadHand Coffee
A brand film for BadHand Coffee, built out of the way they actually make coffee. Before anything was modelled we spent time behind their counter: weighing, grinding, calibrating the machine, tasting a shot change character because one variable had moved.
Everything you see is built. None of it is invented.
Four variables, and a palate
Grind size, water temperature, pressure, time in the cup. Any one of them will change what you taste. The BadHand baristas move between them by method and by palate at once: pull, taste, adjust, pull again, and stop when the sweetness, the acidity and the body sit level with each other.
That is the part you cannot get from a reference photograph. Standing at the counter was how we learned where a barista's attention goes, and when their hands slow down. Those are the beats the animation is made of.
The ritual belongs to somebody
So there are two people behind the counter and the short stays with their hands. Take the hands out and the same information becomes a diagram: accurate, and worth nothing. The obsession is the story, and an obsession needs a face.
Nobody gives screen time to the weighing and the grinding, because on paper that is preparation and the shot is the payoff. Watch a good bar for an hour and it reverses. By the time coffee is running, every decision worth making has already been made.
