The BTO is a research charity: professional scientists working alongside tens of thousands of volunteers, counting birds year after year until the counting becomes evidence that conservation policy can stand on.
Two audiences, in the same room. People who have kept a list since they were nine, and people who have never once looked up.
Someone else's drawings, moving
Viola's illustration came first and the animation was built to serve it. That is easy to get backwards. A drawing carries a weight and a hand, and movement designed before the artwork is understood flattens both.
So it moves less than it could. Enough to carry the story from a nest to a workbench to a sky full of swans, and never enough to turn the drawings into puppets.
The BTO already has the evidence. What the film has to do is make somebody want to be part of collecting it.
