A brand film for PIANO, the fluted marble basin designed by BUDDE. The flutes are the keys, and the name only pays off if you watch water land on them, so the piece was built around the hardest shot in it.
Water is expensive to simulate and unforgiving when it is wrong. It was also the brief.
The room is part of the product
A basin is never bought on its own. It is bought against a wall, under a light, beside whatever the room already has in it. So the architecture was designed with the same care as the object: the tiling, the cabinetry, the pendant, the branch across the window.
A beautiful basin standing in a room nobody would build reads as a render, and a render is not something a client can put in front of a buyer.
Water on the keys
The water is simulated rather than animated by hand, because ridged marble is precisely the surface that catches out a cheat. It braids as it crosses the flutes, and anyone who has ever washed their hands knows on sight when that is faked.
The marble variations were built as stills alongside the film, across the range BUDDE sources from Serafini in Italy, so a specifier sees the basin in the stone they will actually order.
